Move over, Valentine’s Day! Traditionally, the color red in clothing, makeup, and nails was reserved for our vampiest of occasions, like Valentine’s Day, Christmas, or even the Fourth of July!  Red has made an amazing comeback and is now seen widely on women all over the country at all times of the year.  From nail polish to lips to their jeans, beauties are rocking the shade of fire– and looking amazing doing it! What we at Planet Beauty love most about red is that it is so empowering! When wearing red, even if it is just red lipstick or a red accent, you can’t help but feel like you stand out from the crowd. Fortunately for us, red is back in a big, BIG way!

What could possibly be more classic than a red lip while you’re out with your man? Um, nothing, that’s what.  But why not put a twist on the blood red lips and try something a little more unexpected: shades of coral!  Coral is a neutral tone, so it works well for all skin tones and looks.  If your skin has gold or yellow undertones, a peachier or orange coral will be most flattering. If you have pink undertones, choose a pink or red-based coral.  Start by exfoliating your lips to make sure there’s no scaly patches.  Then, line your lips with a nude or lip color liner, and fill them in.  Many a makeup artist will then instruct you to cover over your lips with a light colored concealer to lock in the shade, but this blogger prefers Too Faced’s Lip Insurance primer!  Then, slip on your new shade of coral, and dot a bit of clear gloss in the middle of your bottom lip to create some depth in your pucker. For the best colors, try Smashbox’s Melondrama from the Be Discovered line, or Jane Iredale’s Pure Moist lip color in C.J.

For your nails, try any fun nail art with a fun coral or reddish orange base  (a favorite of this blogger is OPI’s Cajun Shrimp!).  Because nail polish is the perfect accessory to any outfit day or night, make your coral mani POP! Start by filing your nails in to a short, square shape, which tends to look better than long talons with brighter colors.  Lay down a great base coat (Turn Back Time, a rehydrating base coat from Deborah Lippmann) and slowly paint on your coral color.  Once dry, add a little zing to your phalanges in the form of fun nail art (and who doesn’t love nail art?!).  This bloggers favorite for summer is adorable little polka dots on all of your fingers of just one for a statement. Grab a toothpick, and dot a large glob of whatever color you want to use (white looks super cute!) on a piece of aluminum foil.  Load up your tooth pick with color, and start dotting! The more color you pick up, the bigger the dot will be.  Try to make them all the same size for a more uniform look!
