With summer undeniably here, one of the best things you can do for yourself while you’re out at the pool, beach, BBQ, or baseball game is to wear sunscreen! One of the most underused and misunderstood beauty products out there, sunscreen is probably the only beauty product you use that can actually save your life. Read that again, SAVE YOUR LIFE. The American Academy of Dermatology  recommends that everyone apply sunscreen with  SPF 30 or higher  every day even if it’s cloudy.   But less than 20% of Americans follow that rule! Skin cancer is still cancer, and nothing to be flippant about. Luckily, it is also one of the easiest types of cancer to prevent! Read on to get the skinny on SPF, including some new info you might not know about! First of all, a new FDA labeing law  for sunscreens went into effect in June 2011: You will no longer see SPF’s higher than 50, (just 50+) because, according to the FDA, SPF’s over 50 do not provide any additional protection. only sunscreen labled “broad spectrum” (UVA and UVB) that has an SPF of 15 or higher can claim that it reduces the risk of skin cancer. Any product that is not Broad Spectrum, or that is Broad Spectrum but has an SPF between 2 to 14, will be required to have a warning stating that the product has not been shown to help prevent skin cancer or early skin aging. This should help you make a better choice when it comes to protecting your skin!
