The Costume Institute Gala was the event du jour of May with stars from the music and acting realms colliding with the elite of the fashion world. Beyonce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Scarlett Johansson and other Hollywood heavy hitters took over the famous carpeted stairs of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. With tickets reportedly costing $25,000 per individual, the event often deemed as the “Oscars of the fashion world,” provided no shortage of high fashion couture at it’s best.
When it comes to the annual Met Gala, there are no limits. It’s the one red carpet event where the fashion industry is expected to show their best and shock the mainstream media with often unpractical and of kilter styles reserved for the fashion runways. While this often just applies to the fashion, there are always a few who come with the whole package. Beauty trends from this year’s festivities include bold, vampy lips, bronze smoky eyes, peach tones, top knots, and smooth Veronica Lake waves. Here are a few of our favorite looks from the night!
Red lips are being replaced by dark plums and (what’s up, 1990′s?) brown hues! Many stars like Camilla Belle, Kate Bosworth, and Leighton Meester rocked the brown pout, off setting the drama with a very light and shimmered eye color. Celebrities are steering clear of the traditional smoky eye recently and are choosing warmer, softer tones to define the eyes.Bronze shaded eye works well with nude lips and loose waves (ala Ashley Greene). Plum tones have become a huge trend for this season. With the touch of silver on the center of the eyelid, there is added definition and it keeps the look from being too matchy.
Many celebs wore their hair in slicked back top-knot styles, really adding to the alien-esque makeup they rocked. Other fashionistas opted for a more ethereal look, prefering loose waves or pinstraight locks over the more edgy coiffs. To get a perfect topknot, gather your hair onto the top of your head, smooth it back, and secure. Spray with a hard hold hairspray eliminating flyaways and frizzies. Wrap a section of your hair from underneath around the pony tail holder, and secure with a bobby pin.
As for the fashions, well, since many of the A-listers shwo up in wearble art, it’s hard to say what will carry on to your nearest department store. A few trends you can definitely expect to see for Summer are long dresses with sheer skirts so your legs (from the knees down) are visible through the fabric. Designers across the board are cribbing this new look, and beauties are loving it just as much! Also seen were neon “where are are my sunglasses” brights. Pair colors together that you might not think to- like a turquoise colored skirt with a hot yellow top. Try to mix up fabrics and wear a loose, boho top with your favorite pair of colored skinnies.
Until next year’s gala… XOXO, Allie
