Beauty 411: Hit or Myth?

Surely at one point in your life your mom or grandma told you to not eat chocolate because it will make your face break out. There’s a laundry list of “Don’ts” when it comes to beauty, fitness, makeup, and fashion, but not all of them are legitimate! Read on to explore some of the most common misconceptions about your beauty regiment!

Back to the chocolate thing: Go ahead and chow down. There’s nothing in a candy bar or pepperoni pizza that’s going to make zits suddenly pop up—unless you decide to use it as a face mask and slather your skin with it!  The only foods that may exacerbate acne are sushi, shellfish, and soy sauce since they all contain high amounts of iodine, which has been linked to inflammation and breakouts.

Another old wives tale about your skin? Washing your face with cold water will help shrink your pore size.  You got your pore size from mom and dad (gee, thanks!); not much will change it. All cold water does is constrict blood vessels so skin feels tighter. Thankfully, you can minimize their appearance on the surface. When pores are clogged with oil and dead skin, they look bigger. Using a product with salicylic acid will help clean them out. Pores also stretch as you lose collagen, and sun exposure breaks down collagen.  So wear sunscreen—it’ll do more for your pores than an icy splash will!

So many oily lovelies skip on the moisturizer because they were told oily skin has enough hydration. Not so! Many times, oily skin is actually dry skin that is over producing oil to compensate for the lack of moisturizer on the skin. All skin types need the added protection moisturizer provides. Just go for oil free, oil absorbing ones with antioxidants and anti-bacterial ingredients. Pick one up from Planet Beauty!

Some women swear by using different cooking oils to improve their skin, and in this case, they’re right!  Warm vegetable oil helps soften and hydrate dry, cracked skin on your hands, feet, elbows, and anywhere else you need some TLC! Sweet almond oil contains vitamins and minerals, proteins and glycosides and is anti-inflammatory. Apricot kernel oil is rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin A and as it easily penetrates, is ideal for prematurely aged, dry or irritated skin. Avocado oil is also deeply penetrating and is rich in vitamins A, D and E and lecithin and potassium. All of which help soften scales and reveal a younger, smoother looking you!

Want those lashes to grow longer? Whoever said rubbing petroleum jelly on them was just trying to sabotage you.  All Petroleum jelly will do is clog the follicle and stop new lashes from growing out.  Your best bet in growing longer, thicker lashes is to pick up Revitalash from your local Planet Beauty store!

We all want long, luscious locks, but how do we get it to grow faster? Many people say cutting your hair will make it grow faster, but, sorry to disappoint ladies, all cutting your hair does is make it shorter.  Consistently getting small trims to cut off the split ends will make your hair look healthy, and will stop it from splitting farther up the hair shaft, which CAN actually make it look shorter.  So get regular trims of ¼ inch and take some hair growth vitamins to get your tresses growing! Rene Furterer or Nioxin make great supplements to speed up the growth time in your hair (and nails, too!), find yours at Planet Beauty stores!

And the most important one of all, if you want to know how you’ll age, look at your mother.  Genetics account for skin color and type, but only about ten percent of skin ageing.  So, just because mom and grandma have wrinkly skin doesn’t mean you have to! Wear sunscreen in the daylight hours, skip the tanning beds, and drink plenty of water!

Visit your local Planet Beauty store to talk to the experts on how to get your best look for hair, skin, nails, and makeup!
